DISCOVER FLYING RADIO CONTROL CLUB INDOOR FLYING PROGRAM

Indoor RC flying sponsored by Discover Flying Radio Control Club takes place Sunday mornings at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center, 141 Bassett Ln, Hyannis, from December to March. Exact dates are emailed to all members each fall. See “Locations” for a map and directions to HYCC. HYCC rules prohibit food or drink in the gymnasium, and all flyers must have a current Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) membership for insurance purposes.

Cost for entry is $5 per adult member. There is no charge for junior members under 19.  Stop by the glass booth at the HYCC lobby to pay your fee to the attendant.

FLIGHT SAFETY

The Air Boss, appointed by the club Safety Officer, is responsible for overall safety, adherence to flight safety rules, and ensuring that spectators remain in their designated area.

Critical safety rules area as follows:

  • The designated flying area is inside the red out-of-bounds lines of the basketball court.
  • The flight line is outside the red out-of-bounds area on the left side of the gym in front of the bleachers.
  • All pilots must remain behind the flight line while flying an aircraft of any type.
  • Flying is not permitted from the baselines of the court.
  • The pit area will be behind the flight line along the bleachers.
  • Flyers may only retrieve their models after clearing it with any other active flyers.
  • Do not taxi your aircraft towards the pits. Instead, taxi toward either baseline and retrieve your plane from the out of bounds area.
  • Spectators must remain in the bleachers. At no time should spectators be in the active flying area.
  • Maximum number of planes/helicopters in the air at one time will be determined by the Air Boss and flyers on scene.

AIRCRAFT SIZE

No aircraft with batteries larger two cells is allowed. Helicopters should not be larger than the Blade 130X (5 oz. with battery and rotor of 13”).  Quad copters must measure 5” or less diagonally from tip to tip. Airplanes should not have a wingspan greater than 34” or weight more than 250 grams (9 oz.)

Charging of all batteries should be accomplished using best standard practices. Charging bags and/or fireproof containers should be used for charging and transport. A bucket of sand will be provided in the gym for any battery mishaps.

Discover Flying reserves the right to inspect and judge the suitability of any plane or helicopter for indoor use. Speed and weight will be the main criteria to avoid dangerous situations.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL

The Air Boss or club members can agree to limit the number of planes in the air at any one time if the situation warrants. For example, they could decide to divide flights into 10 minute intervals. Small planes may have one half of the court and quads and helicopters the other half for one interval. Large planes would have the entire court for the next interval. Cooperation and common sense are keys to avoiding collisions and/or possible injuries to pilots and spectators in this relatively small space.
