Field Rules and Safety Guidelines

All persons using the flying field are required to have a current AMA License and must be a member of Discover Flying R/C Club. Members must display their AMA and DFRCC membership cards at all times while using the field. All pilots are expected to operate according to the AMA National Safety Code.

ALL GUESTS must provide documentation of current FULL AMA membership to be eligible to fly at the field. They are required to read all AMA and DFRCC Field Rules and agree to abide to the regulations as stated. Non-members are allowed field privileges as a guest for a period of seven days in one calendar year. After seven days they must join the club in order to continue using the field.

All new fliers and guests must be checked out by a qualified club member and will be advised of all club field rules and procedures before being allowed to use the field. A guest must be accompanied by a club member. 

Spectators must remain behind the fence in the provided viewing area.

All aircraft may be subject to a safety inspection before being flown.

On board identification that includes AMA # should be displayed on the inside or outside of all aircraft. Due to new federal regulations regarding all unmanned radio controlled aircraft we ask that you obtain a certificate from the FAA as soon as possible. Go to .to apply for a UAS number.  The certificate number must be placed on all of your aircraft where it can be seen without taking the model apart.

No taxing, take-offs, landings or hand launches are permitted in the parking area or the pits. Pilots are not allowed to taxi back toward the pit area from the flight line. At no time should a pilot be flying over the pit area, parking area, spectator area, over the full scale runways or in the designated NO-Fly Zones. All aircraft operations must remain on the operating side of the published “Safety Lines”. 

Pilots must be on the designated flight line area when flying and not on the runway.

Alternate flight line criteria:

  1. Under adverse sun conditions temporary operation from an alternate flight line shall be permitted. Flight line, safety, and no-fly lines will be modified temporarily as designated for this condition. (see map)

  2. A consensus of members present shall determine whether to use the normal or alternate flight condition. When the alternate flight line condition is in effect, concurrent use of and operation from the normal flight line is prohibited. Normal procedures for safely accessing and crossing the field shall apply for both conditions.
  3. Whenever the alternate flight line is in use a temporary warning sign shall be posted at the pit entrance. This sign shall notify those entering that the alternate flight line is in use and provide a caution that aircraft may be flying over the normal flight stations and closer to the pits than is normal.

Field Operations

Starting glow or gasoline powered engines before 9AM is strictly prohibited out of consideration for our neighbors. Engine starts or aircraft maintenance is not allowed on the runways. Engines should only be started in the pit area or on the taxiways. Engine break-in is restricted to the run-up table only, or in the area adjacent to the run-up table. All pilots must have an approved restraint when starting engines. 

Electric powered aircraft may be flown before 9 AM.

Fly at a reasonable altitude at all times for your aircraft. Maximum altitude cannot exceed 400 feet as per federal regulations
There shall be no flying during full scale Banner aircraft pickups or drops. If flying, take evasive action and land immediately!

A spotter is required from May 15th to September 15th due to full scale airport operations and is recommended at all times throughout the year. The spotter rule and good judgment combined, suggest that one should not fly while alone.

Rockets, jet engines or powered free flights aircraft are prohibited at all times.

All engines must be equipped with a muffler and meet AMA required sound levels. All engines must be fitted with a spinner or AMA approved safety nut.

No vehicles are permitted in the pit areas, or on the runways or any walkway.

No more than three (3) aircraft are allowed in the air at the same time when flying under normal conditions. In order to conduct a special event involving more than three aircraft, such as combat or racing, a majority agreement among those present will permit temporary suspension of the 3-plane rule for the duration of the event. While such an event is in progress, only aircraft directly involved in the event are allowed in the air.

In addition to the maximum three (3) airplanes in the air, up to three (3) additional frequencies may be utilized on the ground for maintenance and preflight checks if using the old style 72 MHz./FM radios.

No 72 MHz transmitter is to be turned on for any reason without the appropriate frequency pin from the frequency board that must be attached to the transmitter. The person holding the frequency pin should place their name clip on the frequency board in the appropriate frequency slot being utilized.

72 MHz transmitter impound will be in effect when there are more than three (3) aircraft present. All 72 MHz transmitters must be placed on the impound rack with the power switch turned off.

ALL 72 MHz TRANSMITTERS must have TX pins. First person at the field should open the pin box to make these accessible to all flyers.
All pilots flying in the secondary field (whether aircraft or helicopter) must stay inside the roped off circle.

R/C aircraft shall not be left running unattended in the pit area. Pilots shall remain with the aircraft at all times while operational.
When charging LiPo batteries always utilize a fire proof surface.

No alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs are allowed on the property, Club members are responsible for their guests and will be held responsible for their actions.

Non-club members are only eligible to fly at the Discover Flying Field as a GUEST of a current member of Discover Flying RC Club. 
All users of the field must utilize a closed refueling system or overflow bottle to prevent any excess fuel overflow from dropping on the ground during refueling operations. This is an environmental concern.
